David and Alan Rudman, the Chicago-based brothers who created Jack’s Big Music Show, are at it again. Not only are they executive-producing Bunnytown (premiering Nov. 10 on Playhouse Disney), but David’s serving as director and puppeteer, and Adam’s head writer. If the final product makes you think of Laugh-In, bunny-style, then they’ve done their job.
What TV shows did you watch growing up?
David: Sesame Street. I loved how incredibly creative it was. Great characters, great animation, great songs.
Adam: All the Sid and Marty Krofft shows like H.R. Pufenstuf and Sigmund the Sea Monster…totally wacky.
What’s your inspiration for Bunnytown?
David: Mostly 1970’s variety shows like Laugh-In and The Muppet Show.
Adam: With a little Tex Avery thrown in.
You’ve each got four kids. Do you try any material out on them?
Adam: We don’t usually try anything out on them.
David: We just write what’s funny to us.
Adam: Although, sometimes we do get funny ideas from things they do…My eight-year-old daughter, Shayna, was nervous to wear her Halloween costume to school and parade in front of [everyone], so I made up a silly song for her to sing in her head to give her confidence. I used that situation in Jack’s Big Music Show when the groundhog didn’t want to come out and look for her shadow in front of all the people and the cameras.
What are the TV-watching rules in your house?
Adam: It’s not really an issue in our house. Our children are pretty active and don’t hunker down in front of the TV. We do use a DVR, but more for shows my wife and I want to watch. I don’t really have to share the TV with my kids because I like watching a lot of their shows – like SpongeBob and Hannah Montana.
What other TV shows do your kids watch?
Adam and David: Jack’s Big Music Show! We happen to love it!
